Raising a dog is all about regularity, clarity, a positive approach and a lot of patience. This certainly applies to house-training your puppy. Depending on the size, age and intelligence of your puppy, house-training requires time and perseverance from you.

How long does it take a dog to be housebroken?

In the case of a small, smart dog with you as a consistent, persistent educator, your puppy can be housebroken in just a few weeks. In extreme opposite cases, it can sometimes take up to a year and you can't always do anything about that yourself.
Keep in mind that in the early stages of house training, you should go outside with your dog up to once every two hours. The most optimal is if you also go outside several times during the night. On average, after 12 weeks, the number of walking times can be reduced to six to eight times a day. After 20 weeks, walking outside four to five times should be sufficient.

How do you housebreak your dog?

Some basic steps are essential in the toilet training process:

• Recognise the sounds the puppy makes. Every puppy makes sounds first before actually doing its needs. So know how to distinguish the different sounds, which makes responding to the right signals easier.
• Make sure you let the dog do his needs in fixed places, that will give clarity.
• When the dog is in a crate, it will hold its stool. So this also helps your pup practise bladder and anus control.
• By going outside very often, it becomes very normal for your pup to be outside and he/she will not associate being inside with doing needs.
• Reward rather than punish. A positive approach ultimately works faster and better. Even when an accident has happened, stay calm and as positive as possible.
