Harmony in the household

Can dogs and cats live together in one household?

In most cases, dogs and cats can live together in one house just fine. That they would be each other's natural enemies is a real misconception. With a proper introduction and some patience, a friendship can even develop between the pets. That introduction and patience: how does it work in practice?

Socialisation and gentle settling in

Before accepting a dog or cat into your household, it is important to check whether he/she is already used to other species in the same room. This makes a difference in the habituation phase, as it will increase the chances of accepting the other pet. Other tips to create harmony between your dog and cat:

  • Let the animals get used to each other gradually. Start by letting them smell each other's blankets or baskets without the pets seeing each other. Then bring them together in one room, but separate from each other so they can observe each other.
  • Make the introduction a positive experience for both dog and cat by giving a reward to both. Consider a toy or a treat.
  • Break off the introduction immediately if either animal experiences stress. Do not force anything and try again later. Keep in mind that how long the introduction period takes can vary from pet to pet. One animal gets used quickly, while another dog or cat needs weeks or months.
  • Provide a safe place for each pet separately. This applies to the room where the dog and cat are together, but also provide a place where the pets can retreat separately.

Character and safety

It is important to know if your dog naturally has a strong hunting instinct or if your cat is very anxious. If so, it may in fact be difficult to get them used to each other. In such a situation, it is important to seek professional help. So the individual character of the dog or cat also determines the degree or speed of creating harmony in the household. A safe environment also includes separating food. Especially in the introduction phase, make sure the dog and cat cannot eat each other's food.
