Protect your pet from fireworks stress

Heading into the turn of the year

The month of December stands for warmth indoors, cosy get-togethers with family and friends. Often gifts, decorations and of course: fireworks. That is already a challenge for some people, let alone for your pet. Good preparation is half the battle, and that goes for New Year's Eve too. How do you prevent fear in your pet during New Year's Eve?

In preparation for New Year's Eve

In the house, provide a quiet, safe place. Set up an area away from windows and doors with familiar toys, favourite food or snacks. Preferably, the place should be dark, can be filled with sound from a radio or TV and closed off from flashes of fireworks. Let your pet stay in this space regularly to get used to it and create safety. Start ‘practising’ dealing with firework sounds well in advance. Make sure your pet gets used to the sound (imitate it yourself via your phone or with a CD) and always point him to his safe haven in the house.

Always remain calm yourself, provide support if your pet is anxious, but do not reward anxious behaviour. Make sure your pet's favourite food is in the safe place. Eat your dog crispy chunks or pressed chunks? Then make sure there is enough of his/her own food present in the house. Cats also value their own, good food.

New Year's Eve

Keep your pet indoors as much as possible on New Year's Eve or visit one of the fireworks-free places near you. Make sure your pet has (almost) no possibility of escaping from the house. Use the radio or TV to mask the loud, unexpected noises outside. Provide distractions in the form of toys, snacks and noise. Chewing and thinking distracts your pet from the fear it is feeling.

The night full of noise and flashes

Make your pet's safe place dark, provide distractions and ‘noise’ to the sounds of fireworks by music or TV. Put out plenty of food and drink, check regularly how things are going and don't let your dog out after 10pm.

Contacting the vet or Puro

Perhaps you intend to give your pet medication or are unsure about the right food? For administering medication to keep your pet calm during New Year's Eve, we always recommend contacting your vet. Never experiment yourself! As a reward or distraction, you could consider our dog sausages, a tasty extra for every dog. For questions on nutrition, we cordially invite you to contact with Puro include.
