Tips for an autumn walk with your dog

In autumn, nature takes on beautiful colours. The forest is littered with leaves. It is a beautiful season for walking with your dog. Not only owners enjoy this season. Dogs also love running through the leaves. They sniff out new smells and get a breath of fresh air.

For a nice autumn walk, we have some tips. So you and your dog can enjoy this season to the full.

1. Choose the right equipment

Temperatures are dropping. It's wet and muddy outside more often. So make sure you have good gear for both yourself and your dog:

Walking shoes: Put on shoes with good grip. In autumn, wet leaves and mud can make it slippery. Good shoes make you less likely to slip, even if your dog suddenly pulls hard on the lead.

Reflective accessories: Do you walk early in the morning or later in the day? Then get a reflective collar or an LED light on your dog's collar. This will keep him highly visible in the dark.

2. Watch out for poisonous plants and mushrooms

In autumn, many new smells are released. For dogs, this is attractive. They sniff around and sometimes take something in their mouths. Keep an eye out for poisonous plants or mushrooms:

Mushrooms: Some mushrooms are poisonous to dogs. Teach your dog not to eat just anything off the ground. Also make sure he doesn't sniff or chew mushrooms. When in doubt: call the vet immediately.

Acorns and chestnuts: In autumn, there are often lots of acorns and chestnuts on the ground. Does your dog eat a lot of them? Then it could cause constipation or even poisoning. Therefore, keep a close eye on him.

3. Be alert to weather and safety

Autumn weather can turn quickly. It can be dry on departure but suddenly start raining. Therefore, make sure you are well prepared:

Weather report: Check the weather before you leave.

Towel: Bring a towel. After a muddy walk, it's nice to get your dog clean and dry beforehand.

Slipperiness: Leaves on the ground can become slippery, especially when wet. Be extra careful on hills and narrow paths.

Protection against ticks and fleas: Ticks are also active in autumn. Check your dog for ticks after your walk and make sure you have good protection against fleas and ticks.

4. Ensure hydration and energy

Even on cool autumn days, your dog may get thirsty. Running and playing make him thirsty and hungry.

Water: Bring a bottle of water and a collapsible drinking bowl. Or stop somewhere where your dog can drink.

High-energy snacks: With the changing temperatures and challenging terrain, a walk in autumn can take extra energy. Take some treats along the way for your dog. Think pieces of sausage or dog snacks to keep his energy up. We have several delicious steamed dog sausages in our product range.

5. Visit a dog walking area

Let your dog run free in an off-leash area. He can let off steam here. This will keep him fit.

Also, your four-legged friend can explore and sniff around at his own pace. This stimulates his senses and mental well-being.

In addition, your dog will get the chance to meet other dogs here. This is good for his social skills.

6. Enjoy the moments together

Autumn walks are a great opportunity to spend intentional time with your dog. Let your dog sniff around. Watch how he enjoys all the new smells. Stop occasionally and look at the autumn colours together.

With these tips, an autumn walk will be a safe and fun experience. Whether you opt for a short walk or a long trek, autumn offers many opportunities to enjoy together. Make sure you are well prepared, keep a close eye on your dog, and above all, don't forget to have fun together in this colourful season!
