How does the transition to winter time affect your dog or cat?

Every year, we switch from summer to winter time. Setting the clock back not only affects people, but also pets. Dogs and cats can be really bothered by the changing of the clock.

How does your dog react to winter time?

Dogs often live according to a set daily rhythm. They are used to certain times for eating, walking and sleeping. Shifting these times by an hour can cause confusion. Your dog suddenly has to wait longer and doesn't understand why.

They have internal biological clocks that suddenly need to be adjusted. This can affect their behaviour, energy and appetite. For example, dogs get restless when they think it is time to go outside but have yet to wait.

Dogs also watch their owner. If you get out of rhythm because of the time change, your dog often notices and gets upset too.

How does your cat react to time change?

Cats tend to be a bit more independent than dogs and often follow the daylight more closely. Many domestic cats live on a changing schedule. They often eat when they want and sleep when it suits them. As a result, these cats often do not notice the clock change as much as dogs.

Yet cats can also get upset. When you as the owner suddenly have a different rhythm or when the fixed feeding times change.

How do you make the transition easier for your pet?

To make a smooth transition to winter time for your pet, you can gradually adjust your dog or cat's schedule. You shift the times for eating and walking by a few minutes every day. This way, your dog or cat will slowly get used to the new rhythm and avoid stress.
