What determines the composition of adult dog food?

One dog loves nothing more than lying in the sun for hours, whilst another runs for kilometres chasing a ball. Yet they are often fed the same food. We tailor Puro’s adult dog food to the energy requirements of adult dogs. This starts with the ratio of protein to fat. An active dog gets more out of its food when the balance is right. Less active dogs, on the other hand, maintain their weight when the composition is tailored to their needs.

We only select easily digestible ingredients. This ensures your dog gets all the nutrients they need without putting too much strain on their stomach. Dogs with sensitive digestion will notice the difference: less waste in the gut, and more energy left for the rest of the day.

Buying adult dog food: how do you know what’s right for your dog?

The packaging doesn’t tell the whole story. Check the ingredients, but also pay attention to the texture of the kibble and its smell. Good adult kibble smells fresh, not musty or chemical. The kibble shouldn’t be too hard, but nor should it be so soft that it falls apart before it reaches the bowl. Also bear in mind your dog’s nutritional needs. Large breeds benefit from a different type of kibble to small dogs. A six-year-old Labrador requires different nutrition to a three-year-old Jack Russell. How does adult dog food contribute to healthy digestion?

Adult dogs digest their food differently to puppies. The enzymes in the stomach work more slowly, meaning that heavier ingredients remain in the stomach for longer. That’s why we choose chicken, lamb and rice for our food. These are all easily digestible sources that are absorbed quickly. This helps prevent your dog from becoming lethargic after eating or suffering from a bloated stomach.

Which dogs is adult dog food suitable for?

Not every dog reaches adulthood at the same age. Small breeds often reach maturity around their first birthday, whilst large breeds do so only after a year and a half. You can recognise the right moment by your dog’s behaviour. Look out for fewer growth spurts and a greater need for routine. Some dogs need extra support, for example if they have sensitive skin or joints. We take this into account in the formulation. You’ll see the difference in the shine of their coat and the suppleness of their movement. A bowl that’s emptied every day without a murmur – that’s the best proof.
